There is no doubt about it. Health care costs are soaring. It is not unusual that every year (yes, every year), companies are bumped up an additional 20% to cover employee's health insurance. One way to counteract it is to stop providing company-paid insurance and let employees pick up the cost or bump up their co-pays for coverage. Another avenue is to provide incentives for employees to get and stay healthy to keep insurance rates down.

One company seems to be going over the top to do everything it can to help employees get fit and stay healthy. One side argues that it is in the best interest of everyone to adopt healthy life habits. Another group says the direction is too intrusive. But have no doubt - companies are looking at and for employees who will help keep insurance costs down and productivity up. Fitness and life habits regarding healthy choices does matter in the workplace.

What are your thoughts?

I remember when everything was covered under my insurance - physicals, lab tests, surgery, prescriptions, dental work, vision care, etc.  Now, I think twice about going to the doctor, having fancy tests (are they always necessary?), even getting new prescriptions.

We'll never see those days again.  I don't blame employers who are trying to promote healthy habits for their employees.  Wellness is much less expensive than illness.

People don't realize how much money employers pay for these benefits.  Yes, my out-of-pocket costs go up every year, but usually not as much as the premiums my employer pays.

All we can do is try to stay healthy and safe.
