I have been out of work or underemployed for over a year.  I just relocated to Dallas from an economically depressed area to take advantage of better opportunities for sustainable income.  Although I enjoyed working at my previous job, my salary was less than what I was receiving with unemployment benefits and $17,000 less than my previous employment.

When a prospective employer asks for a salary history, what can I do to avoid unfavorable salary negotiations.  I want to find a long-term position that will allow me to become self reliant once again.

Hi SarahAP,

Great question. Employers shouldn't be basing your compensation offer on what you made in previous jobs, but that can and does happen. You can make note in your cover letter that you are attaching a salary history as requested, but your prior earnings are due to lower average salary levels in your previous location. It's better to discuss this issue during face-to-face interviews and only when the employer mentions it. The key is to communicate your value so that employers give you a fair (or generous!) offer.
