I have been actively looking to relocate from China to the USA for 2 1/2 years now.  I moved to China in 2006 independently to gain global work experiences and cross cultural expertise within China, the world's largest potential customer market.  I feel my time here is done and while I have been working on an internal transfer with my current employers, they are a 200,000+ employee global company, I have basically been told I am more valuable where I am and no positions in the US are open for me.

While in the IT industry my skills over the years are no longer technical but fall into Project Management, vendor management, and team management, I am considered a supervisor with 15 employees in 4 countries I currently manage and report to a regional manager.  My frustration has been with getting any feedback from potential employers.  I did get some attention early on in my searches only to have the HR departments not consider me because they mistakenly believed I was not a US citizen or due to my location, still in China.  Since I added this to my objective I have received 0 replies in 14 months of job submissions.  I make it clear I am moving on my own and not asking for anything outside of a job.  I am not sure if scanning software is thinking I am Chinese, or if as one HR person said, when you get back in the USA let us know.  In the current job market it is too risky to just quite my current job and begin job hunting in the US.  Any advice would be appreciated.

If they mistakenly believe you're not a US citizen, perhaps it's worth considering including your birthplace and nationality on your resume to clear up the confusion.

Hi JyBravo,

It's hard to determine why you haven't received any responses to your resume without knowing more details about where and how you submitted it. If you're responding to advertised openings with global companies, you are most likely competing with hundreds or thousands of other applicants. Locations (zip codes) are often used in the U.S. as part of screening, so your current location could be eliminating you. Do you have any ties in the U.S. that would allow you to use their address as a temporary U.S. address? I would also add your citizenship and the fact that you're paying for relocation expenses at the top of your resume -- near your contact information so it stands out.

As far as your resume's content, it's easy to see that you have very impressive experience, but I would suggest that you add more project details -- especially results. Break the information into smaller "chunks" so that your resume is easier to skim. Bullets work great to separate points and are generally easier to skim, which is what most employers are doing. If you haven't job searched since you moved to China in 2006, much has changed in the resume world -- "short and sweet" career documents are more effective now. I would look to edit the details of your earlier work experience, particularly jobs from the 1990s.

One approach that has worked for my project manager clients is to have a separate document for project success stories. You can list 5-6 of your most impressive/relevant projects, including your role, challenges faced, budget, # on the team, deliverables, and project outcomes/results/benefits to your employer or client.

You are at a disadvantage job searching from China, so leverage social media to build relationships -- enhance your LinkedIn profile and add connections, network with others in your industry, and connect with recruiters specializing in opportunities for international tech managers.

I'd certainly add a "US Citizen" bullet.

As far as more detail, I don't have the attention span to read this now.

I agree that this needs bullets and sub bullets, but it needs focus and a diet too. 

Way to much on older jobs.  Thanks for your service, but who really cares what you did in the Navy?  Honorable discharge, that would look good.
