Please advise me regarding my cover letter.  I am currently working in a social services position (my degree field), but would like to return to accounting, which I have several years of experience in.  I also currently work for my husband's business as his bookkeeper, so I have that listed as well as my 8-5 position, although I haven't clarified that it is my husband's business.  Thank you!!

I am currently seeking a challenging position to utilize my six years of experience in the accounting field.  I am enthusiastic about new opportunities, and am confident that my broad background in administration and bookkeeping would make me a valuable asset to your professional staff.

I have been fortunate to have diverse work experiences, from working on-site for a small business to working in the corporate office for a national franchise.  I have served as the sole member of the accounting team responsible for processing all of the accounting functions, including daily cash register reconciliations, biweekly payroll, monthly accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank and general ledger reconciliations, and completing year end close duties.   I have also served as the accounts payable specialist in a larger department and the liaison to other departments.  With this position I processed payroll for multiple locations totaling over fifty employees.

Throughout my career, I have developed outstanding communication and decision-making skills, and have served as a strong leader while supervising and training others. While at VIP Marina, I was able to completely document the accounting and administrative procedures in order to establish a handbook for future employees.  With Workforce Solutions, I worked on a two person team to establish written procedures to assist in future trainings and to clarify the transition to a new paperless system.  My ability to establish an exceptional rapport with individuals on all levels has been crucial to my success.

Some of my personal qualities include dedication, dependability, a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and excellent organizational and time management skills. I am a highly motivated professional with the energy and drive necessary to achieve goals and objectives.  Furthermore, I am always eager to improve myself through new learning opportunities.

Enclosed is my résumé for your review.  I look forward to discussing this employment opportunity with you further.  Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Hi m_carter,

Your cover letter is an excellent start. It seems like it was written in a different voice than your resume, so that's something you might want to look at -- the two documents should have the same tone and writing style.

Your letter could be edited down by a paragraph or so, just to keep it concise and easy to skim. Editing unnecessary words can also help shorten your letter. For example, "goals and objectives" are the same thing, so pick one or the other.

I also think it's a good idea to address your career change and strong interest in returning to accounting. The employer is going to see your degree and experience and wonder what you are doing. This is a good chance for you to talk about your motivation to return to accounting.

Wishing you good luck!
Best wishes,
Kim Isaacs
