Hi m_carter,

Thank you for posting your resume! You will need to target your resume more towards accounting and reorganize your resume's sections to emphasize your accounting-related qualifications. Here are some specific tips:

- Revise the summary so that the reader immediately knows you are looking for an accounting position. Include a few bullets that highlight your relevant skills and credentials -- right now, an employer would have no idea that you are seeking a position in accounting.

- Swap the Experience and Education sections -- you have excellent experience in the accounting field, so that should be prominently listed. The internship can be moved to the bottom of the resume or folded into your bachelor's degree studies.

- Consider moving your bookkeeping certificate higher in the Education section.

- Add "part-time" (if that's accurate) to your bookkeeper position. The description for your older, non-accounting job (from 2003) can be edited down.

I hope this helps and gives you a starting point for improving your resume!
Best wishes,

Thank you so much for the feedback!  When I was on my last job search, trying to switch from accounting to social services, I worked with a professional resume writer on my resume, and I just updated it this time.  Needless to say, jobsearching is not a strong talent of mine!  I have been working on my resume & cover letter all evening, and will make the adjustments that you suggested as well.  Thanks again!

Another question.  Since I have been using this horrible resume, if I applied for a job several weeks ago, and see that it is still advertised a few weeks in the future, would it be okay to reapply with my new and improved resume?  Or would the employer just think that I was mindlessly sending out resumes.

Thanks!
Mandi

Hi m_carter,

That makes sense because your resume is very oriented towards social services. It's a bit tricky to write a resume for a career change -- you have to keep in mind what skills and credentials the employer will be looking for.

It's a great idea to reapply to jobs with your new resume. I've had many clients do this and they've gotten interview invitations after submitting a new-and-improved resume. You can also try to connect with the hiring manager and ask if it's okay to submit an updated resume.
Best wishes,
