    • Skills/Qualifications too old?

I'm currently looking to transition from a Customer Service Representative (Call Center) position to an Administrative  Assistant/Receptionist position or similar office position. I have all kinds of pertinent experience for a Admin Assistant position, but the jobs where I got those skills are not listed on my resume because the jobs are so old and I don't want my resume to be too long.

So what I want to know is..

1) Is there such a thing as experience or skills being too old?
2) If there is no such thing as experience or skills being too old, if I leave that job off my resume because it was ten years ago, will it look like I'm lying if I list those skills in a summary?

Thank you in advance.

Yes, not only are some skill sets too old but they can date you as well.  I am a whiz on an IBM keypunch machine but that is not going on my resume.  That might make me "overqualified" for the job I am applying to.

2) If there is no such thing as experience or skills being too old, if I leave that job off my resume because it was ten years ago, will it look like I'm lying if I list those skills in a summary?

If the skill is still relevant, you can "move it up" in the resume on in the Summary of Qualifications section.  You don't necessarily have to tie it in with a particular employer.

Hi wfm07,

sameoldsong gave you perfect advice. How old are the positions? If you don't want to display the dates, you can still include the earlier jobs by creating an Administrative Career section. A quick blurb could work to show that you have the required experience, like this:

-------------------------------------------------
Administrative & Clerical Experience
-------------------------------------------------
Held administrative/clerical positions for ABC Co and DEF Co, ensuring smooth office operations for these ___-industry employers.... (Write a short section describing your job duties as well as accomplishments.)

You can talk about relevant skills and accomplishments without tying yourself down to a specific date range.

Good luck to you!
Best wishes,

Hi wfm07 - You can list work experience from 10+ years ago, especially since it's relevant to your current goal.
