Hi,

I'm trying to apply to Target.  When putting in my job information they ask two very damning questions.

"May we contact these employers"

and

"Reason for leaving"

I thought that it wasn't required to tell people that you were "involuntarily terminated"?  There is a place to explain it, but isn't selecting "involuntarily terminated' a quick way to make sure your application ends up on the discard pile?  Will they even look at the explanation?

And if you say "no" you can't contact my employers, what kind of message does that send them?  And if you say "yes", knowing that they'll most likely say something bad about you?  I've been away from this job for over a year.

And these fields are REQUIRED and I cannot move forward until I put answers down.  Reasons like this are why I've failed to find even a crappy job at a box store for over a year.

Hi jdzane,

Yes, form fields box you in and if you want to apply, you have to answer the questions to move forward and submit your application. That's why it's better to try to build connections within your desired store and see if you can get a personal referral.

For the "why did you leave" question, you can say "position terminated" without providing additional information. It's pretty rare for someone to have a "perfect" career path, so you just have to get past the screening system so you can explain your situation to a human.

Hang in there and good luck to you!
Best wishes,
