Hi vmurf,

Thank you for posting your resume to this forum! Here are a couple of ideas for improving your document:

- Include a career goal. The reader should be able to glance at your resume and immediately know what you are looking to do. You can add your goal to your list of introductory bullets. Also consider revising these bullets so that they're more job-skill related and less generic. So many resumes claim the applicant is "detail-oriented" and "dependable" -- what makes you different? What do you bring to the table that others don't? I also think you should remove the part about studying email -- knowing how to email is expected of most applicants. Maybe change to the specific program, such as Outlook.

- Make sure your work experience is relevant to your current goal. As we don't know what you are targeting, it's impossible to assess the content of your Work Experience section, but your first few bullets are very office/computer related. If you're not seeking a restaurant position, you don't have to expand on your unrelated tasks. Instead, focus on skills that are relevant to your goal -- working in a fast-paced environment, improving the stockroom's organization to enhance efficiency, improving customer service/sales, etc.

I hope this is helpful!
Best wishes,
Kim Isaacs

Thank you for the help. I am trying to take your advice. My goal is to regain my computer experience. I have a total of 5 years of computer experience. The problem is these experience were about 10 -20 years ago. These jobs were temporary. I am having a hard time getting a full-time job in the computer field. I want to do data entry. How do I put computer experience on my resume without the dates? Any help would be great. Thanks.

I redid my resume. What do you think of this:

  • Completed daily tasks by assisting staff with meal clean up and busing of dining room tables as well as setting the tables and pouring ice waters

For this one, I already have it under another job tasks. Basically I did the same thing with both. I wasn't sure how to word it different.

    • Organized and maintained a safe, sanitary and orderly work area

Thank you for any help. smile

Here is another idea:

Helped with meal clean-up, dish maintained, and stockroom organization

Maintained a safe, sanitary, and organized work area at all times

Assisted cooks and kitchen staff with various tasks as needed

Gcflearnfree.org. its hard to get in the classes that give you cont-ed credits, but you can also take onsite tutorials, and then zip thru the classes. You will want the classes to current-date your computer skills, and the tutorials will help you update. And as the name says, its free.

I've heard great things about the khan ? Academy, also online corses, but haven't been onsite.

If you go to gcf tho, you can put completion dates on your resume. That will make you look more current than you experience. Also put on yourvresume your goal of a data entry job, and essential to that is typing sppeed and accuracy. You can test online, and my current employer did actually, but you can certify if your government has a program for workforce development. Mine is state level, and they certify typing testsand have courses. While there, look at national career readiness cert also. Quantifies thinking skills.
