Hi Ms. Issacs,

I totally agree with the clichéd working as you pointed out...a quick Google search actually shows the same words being used on a number of other resumes. Your suggestions do indeed make alot of sense. Here's my summary for the time being with the changes put in place. The parts that are in blue font are what I'm thinking of adding. Please let me know what you think.

SUMMARY

Mechanical engineer with more than 3 years of experience in computer-aided-design and drafting (CADD) and nearly 2 years of experience in process engineering.

§         Proven success in self-managed and team-based projects with excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills; interface effectively with upper management, staff, and peers

§         Proficient in utilizing engineering and office tools and technologies such as Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, SDRC I-DEAS, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and MATLAB

§         Effective at combining creative thinking with logical ideas to develop solutions to challenging problems in both areas of design engineering and process engineering

As you can see, I've combined the 1st and 3rd bullets. I was also thinking of using the phrase as seen in the 3rd bullet, instead of using the describe the type of ME projects that I've worked on...not only will it save some space in the summary, but it will also give the reader some incentive to go on and read the resume further. Plus, if the reader is interested they can view my LinkedIn profile, where my college ME projects are highlighted, to see what other ME projects I've worked on (my profile link is given on the resume header).

Hi arv1in,

The changes you made are fantastic and I see what you're saying about sparking the reader's interest to learn more about you. I think this would definitely work to grab the attention of hiring managers. I still would like to see some indication of what you've worked on. The last bullet is a good teaser, but it's vague -- I would add at least a hint of the design and process engineering projects you've worked on.

Overall, an excellent summary -- it's well above average compared to others I've seen in your field.
Best wishes,
Kim Isaacs

Hi Ms. Isaacs,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm still lost as to what I should put down as my design engineering and process engineering projects.  As for my process engineering experience, I've so far worked on reactors, heat exchangers (both scraped surface and multi-tube), and air classifier mills. I'm not quite sure how to word it to say that I've worked on these equipments and machinery and have a relatively good knowledge of them also. I've included what I have for my resume thus far below.

Arv,

I wish I could meet you in person.  You seem very talented.  I'd like to have you on my team.

I don't really know what's going on with you.  Let me ask, if you don't mind, do you speak English as your first language?

Haha, thanks JohnGalt for the very kind words. I wouldn't mind being on your team since I'm desperately looking for another job at the moment....just as long as relocation is covered :-D

And yes, English is my first language. Why do you ask?

Hi arv1in,

Thanks for posting your complete resume -- it looks great. As far as indicating your specific process and design engineering experience, have you considered creating an "Engineering Skills" section that lists these skills? You can break it up into two bulleted sections for "Process Engineering Skills" and "Design Engineering Skills."

Your resume could use some minor editing. For example, you added incorrect capitalization (design engineering and process engineering) in the summary. In the fourth job bullet, change to "ensure" (not "assure"). You have a couple of instances of "in order to" that can be shortened to simply "to." Look for places where you can make the content more concise. "New" and "incoming" personnel is repetitive (it's understood personnel are incoming if they are new), so pick one or the other.

Also look for areas to take your accomplishments to the next level. For example, did you reduce production costs as a result of your focus on TPM strategies? Can this be quantified or estimated? Did you expand the average life of equipment by implementing lean manufacturing strategies? Was there previously a problem of equipment downtime that you eradicated?

I hope this is helpful! Wishing you good luck in your job search.
Best wishes,
Kim Isaacs

Ms. Isaacs,

Thanks for the very helpful comments...I have implemented your suggested edits.

As for creating an "Engineering Skills" section with the 2 sub-sections, I feel that will take up un-needed space on an already long resume (1 and 1/2 pages for someone with such little years of experience). Plus, my current resume already lists those skills...so it will only be repetitive to do so.

In regards to the TPM bullet, it really is more or less part of the job--in other words, it's just simply routine maintenance that I've conducted to help keep the equipments functioning. As you can see from the resume, there is very little bullets that depict any eye-catching accomplishments...just mainly duties. Nevertheless, these same duties are things I've either never done before, or things I've done before but not on such a grand scale. Therefore, I tend to present the job duties as both job duties and accomplishments (if that makes any sense).

I'm thinking of having the Summary say this (the After part):

Before:

Mechanical Engineer with more than 6 years of experience in computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) and design engineering and nearly 2 years of experience in process engineering.
? Proven success in self-managed and team-based projects with excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills; interface effectively with upper management, staff, and peers
? Proficient in utilizing engineering and office tools and technologies such as Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, SDRC I-DEAS, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and MATLAB
? Effective at combining creative thinking with logical ideas to develop solutions to challenging problems

After:

? More than 6 years of experience in design engineering with focus on computer-aided design and drafting (CADD)
? Nearly 2 years of experience in process engineering specializing in air classifier mills, turbo-screeners, heat exchangers, and chemical reactors
? Proven success in self-managed and team-based projects with excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills; effective at combining creative thinking with logical ideas to develop solutions to challenging problems
? Proficient in utilizing engineering and office tools and technologies such as Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, SDRC I-DEAS, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and MATLAB

I seperated the design engineering and process engineeing stuff into 2 different bullets, and made it more concise, but specific as to what kind of experience I have with each. I deleted the "interface effectively with upper management, staff, and peers" part from a previous bullet since it seemed redundant because it is alluded to in the body of the resume, and also because it seemed like a buzz-phrase. As such, I combined " Proven success in self-managed and team-based projects with excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills" and "Effective at combining creative thinking with logical ideas to develop solutions to challenging problems" into one bullet to save space....although I hope neither are buzz-phrases.

What do you think?

Thanks again. Have a Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year.

Hi arv1in,

I really like your revised summary. It communicates the areas that you are experienced in and hiring managers can quickly see what you bring to the table. I would add "Mechanical engineer" back in the first line ("Mechanical engineer with....") and you will be all set!

Happy holidays to you and yours!
Best wishes,
